Hutch Junior Girl Scouts build and install Little Free Library in Wolfs Lane Park

Junior Girl Scouts Sadie Ashlock, Sarafina Deighton and Julia Snarr from Hutchinson Elementary School have built and installed a Little Free Library in Wolfs Lane Park. This project is their Bronze Award for Girl Scouts.

A Little Free Library is a “take a book, return a book” free book exchange. Anyone may take a book or bring a book to share. There are over 80,000 Little Free Libraries in 90+ countries and in all 50 states.

The girls wanted a Little Free Library in Pelham because it will give something for older kids to do at Woodland Park, will provide free books for everyone, will always be open and you can recycle the books that you are not using. The girls were inspired to build the library after seeing one in Harbor Park in Mamaroneck.

The girls plan to clean the library, restock it and make sure there is nothing inappropriate inside. When they can’t maintain it any longer, they will hand it over to younger Girl Scouts who are looking for something to do along their journey.

The girls presented their idea to former Mayor Volpe and the Trustees and got their approval at the Village of Pelham Board meeting on June 12, 2018. The Junior League of Pelham kindly donated the materials needed to build the Library. They were excited to finally get the Library in the ground and give back to the community.

According to Village of Pelham Trustee Lisa Hill-Ries, “The Little Free Library will be a wonderful addition to Woodland Park, and what makes it even more special is that it was brought to us by an intrepid group of young Pelham women. Thank you, girl scouts, for your hard work and dedication to our Village’s public spaces!”

A ribbon cutting will be held on Friday, May 24th at 3:30 pm outside Woodland Park.

The girls would like to thank the following people:

Thank you to the Junior League of Pelham for purchasing the items needed to build our library.

Thank you to former Mayor Volpe, former Trustee Xaira Ferrara, Mayor Mullen and the current Board of Trustees for listening to our proposal and allowing us to put the library in Wolfs Lane Park.

Thank you to Joe Senerchia and the Department of Public Works for helping us install the library.

Thank you to our moms and dads for guiding us during our project and helping us decorate the library.
