Pelham Manor mayor points to ‘courteous neighbor’ ethic as village faces Covid-19

Editor’s note: This letter was provided by Pelham Manor Mayor Jennifer Monachino Lapey.

The last few weeks have presented some of the greatest challenges during my tenure as mayor. As I write, there are  17 confirmed cases of Covid-19 in Pelham Manor and 5,944 in Westchester County. There will be more in upcoming days.

Life today looks very different than it did a month ago. People are working from home. People are anxious, and people are sick. Tragically, people have succumbed to this brutal virus. While experts advised of possible pandemics, most residents never anticipated that a viral outbreak could deal such a life-altering blow to the world, with a direct hit on our community. Although the medical realities of Covid-19 and its related restrictions are stressful, we do have some unique opportunities. Many of us have more time for reflection, due to limited schedules and reduced interaction with others. I humbly suggest that this is a time to appreciate things that are available to us on a regular basis in our community, while remaining mindful that Covid-19 lurks.

In Pelham Manor, as in neighboring municipalities, we are fortunate to have some of the most capable first responders and service department professionals in the world. These dedicated individuals are committed to protecting our way of life against our collective opponent, Covid-19. As we disperse to our homes, practicing social distancing and recommended hygiene protocols, these brave people are on the front lines, providing essential services. While New York is on “pause,” we also find ourselves with more time to think about fellow residents. I am proud that Pelham Manor follows a policy that is not captured in our village code or in any legal language. We have the “Courteous Neighbor” standard, which we operate under daily. At its core, this standard provides a community guideline for considerate and respectful behavior. As Pink Floyd urged in its iconic album “The Dark Side of the Moon,” “Breathe, breathe in the air. Don’t be afraid to care.”

My colleagues on the Pelham Manor Board of Trustees join me in wishing everyone good health this spring. We will continue to serve on your behalf, providing essential local services, to the extent possible. We look forward to seeing you on the bright side of Covid-19!

Best wishes to all,
Jennifer Monachino Lapey
