FLES students perform plays

Excellent job by our FLES students and Teachers!

Third grade students at Prospect Hill and Siwanoy showcased what they learned the first year of the Foreign Language Elementary School (FLES) program by performing plays entirely in Spanish.

The performances were a collaborative effort between FLES teacher Lauren Gobbo, music teacher Eric Katz and art teacher Casey Gallagher.

The plays were based on Eric Carle’s books “Today is Monday,” Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?” and “From Head to Feet,” which translate in Spanish to “Hoy es lunes,” “Oso pardo, oso pardo, ¿Qué ves ahí?” and De la cabeza a los pies.”

“Hoy es lunes,” performed by Mrs. Kayser’s Prospect Hill class and Mrs. Miro’s Siwanoy class, showed a restaurant scene with dialog between a waiter and customers discussing the menu of the day. The script and music reinforced the Spanish calendar and food vocabulary that was part of their Spanish curriculum.

“Oso pardo, oso pardo, ¿Qué ves ahí?” was performed by Ms. Foglia’s Prospect Hill class and Mrs. Ciolino’s Siwanoy class and reinforced the colors portion of the curriculum.

“De la cabeza a los pies,” performed by Ms. Diano’s Siwanoy class, reflected the students learning about different body parts in Spanish.

The FLES program began this school year in grades 2 and 3 at all four elementary schools and is slated to expand to 4th grade in 2018-19. As part of FLES, a dedicated Spanish teacher joins the students’ regular class for 30 minutes every other day, to incorporate language instruction into the regular grade-level curriculum.
