WEEKLY EVENTS IN WESTCHESTER COUNTY PARKS
Feb. 16 – 22, 2019 AND PRESIDENTS’ WEEK

SATURDAY, FEB. 16

Trailside Nature Museum at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation, Routes 35 and 121 South, Cross River – (914) 864-7322
Sugar House Chat – 10 a.m. – 12 noon
Every morning during sugaring season we are busy making one of nature’s sweetest rewards, maple syrup. Come into the sugar house to chat about the process. Also 2/23.

Audubon Backyard Bird Count – 10 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
Join other citizen scientists and contribute to a real-time snapshot of global bird populations. Count birds for as little as 15 minutes, or as long as you wish. Beginners and experts are welcome. Introduction and short presentation precedes the start of count.

Great Backyard Bird Count  — 10 a.m. – 12 noon
A walk around the property tallying the numbers and kinds of birds to create an annual snapshot of the distribution and abundance of birds at the preserve. Bring binoculars.

Spin ’n’ Knit – 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Calling all spinners and knitters, beginning or experienced! Come gather in an informal atmosphere and be part of a monthly spinning and knitting group. No fee or registration required for first time attendees; $5 for each subsequent class.

Treasures of Love: Art, Buildings and Gardens – 1 p.m. – 2 p.m.
Find out which paintings represent love, which buildings across the world were built with love, and where the most romantic gardens are located.

Volunteer Work Project: Spreading Gravel on the Hiking Trails – 1 p.m. – 3 p.m.
Great for any type of service credit hours. Please bring work gloves. All hand tools will be provided.

SATURDAY – SUNDAY,  FEB. 16 – 17

Project Feeder Watch – 9 a.m. – 11 a.m.
Identify and count birds at the nature center’s bird feeders. Beginners encouraged, all welcome! Saturday and Sunday mornings through March. Go to projectfeederwatch.org.

SUNDAY, FEB. 17

Sugaring at Muscoot – 12 noon – 3 p.m.
Sugaring is in full swing at the farm. Watch how maple sap is turned into syrup. Also 2/23 and 24.

Conservatory Tour – 2 p.m. – 3 p.m.
Join Lasdon’s horticulturist for a conservatory tour featuring the tropical rainforest exhibit. Learn about rainforests and colorful tropical plants. Regular weekend price of $7 for adults and $3 for children 12 years and under and includes the tour. Tickets are sold at the Shop at Lasdon where the tour will begin.

Bluebird Nesting Boxes Make ’n’ Take – 2 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.
Build a box and put it up in your yard. All tools are provided. One nesting box per family. Children under 12 years of age must be accompanied by an adult

Bird Walk – 3 p.m. – 5 p.m.
Bring binoculars and join the experts from Saw Mill River Audubon for a bird watching hike. All levels welcome. Meet at ballfield parking near main entrance.

Farm Skills Camp for Kids  – 12 noon – 3 p.m.
Kids in grades 4 to 6 can learn many new skills at the farm every day this week. Sign up for one or all five  classes. Fee is $30 per day or $125 for the entire week. Registration is required at (914) 864-7286. Schedule is as follows:

  • Monday, February 18 – Maple Sugaring
  • Tuesday, February 19 – Sewing
  • Wednesday, February 20 – Build a Fairy House
  • Thursday, February 21 – Cooking
  • Friday, February 22 – Farm Chores

TUESDAY, FEB. 19

Full Moon Walk and Campfire – 6 p.m. – 8 p.m.
Enjoy a guided night walk using only the light from the moon to explore the preserve and learn about nocturnal and crepuscular animals and their habits. Following the walk, take in the nighttime beauty of the preserve with a campfire and treats. Bring blankets and chairs to sit around the fire.
