First-term trustee backs Pelham Democratic slate for proven track record of leadership

To the editor,

On Tuesday March 19, I ask that you cast your vote for the slate of candidates with a proven track record of leading and bettering our village. That slate consists of Democratic candidates: Chance Mullen for mayor and Ariel Spira-Cohen, Lisa Hill-Ries and Mike Carpenter for board of trustees.

By now you have heard and read a lot about the achievements credited to our slate of Democratic candidates, and the commitment and love they have for our village. I therefore won’t repeat what’s already been said. What I do want to relay to you is my perspective as the newest trustee on the board.

As a first-term elected official, I can tell you the complexities associated with truly understanding the village budget, the workings of the police department, fire department and the department of public works are enormously complex. It’s not an easy job, and it comes with a steep learning curve. Regardless of a candidate’s background—even in finance—a municipal budget is a breed of its own. It is a road map of nearly everything we do as a community. It’s how we prioritize and spend our neighbor’s money.

A mayor must understand the intricacies of each and every department thoroughly so strategic changes can be made when opportunities arise, often on very short notice.

Chance Mullen is accomplished, capable and very ready for this undertaking. I can’t imagine anyone taking on the helm of our village without the experience Chance has gained as a trustee.

Unfortunately, you’ve likely read the leaflets and flyers targeting Democrats in a manner I can only refer to as a highly offensive misinformation campaign. I urge you to do your own research and differentiate facts from fear-mongering. The information is widely available on the village’s website and by reaching out to any current board member. By doing nothing, as the opposition suggests, the only thing the opposition will be preserving is more vacant lots, derelict gas stations and empty storefronts.

Vote for the Democratic slate that will continue to propel Pelham Forward, so that it thrives for not only our families but for generations to come.
