February 4, 2020–Andom Ghebreghiorgis, progressive candidate for Congress district NY-16, doesn’t accept donations from corporate PACs and knows the unwanted effect of money, or lack of, in politics, particularly as a primary challenger in a district with a thirty-year incumbent.

But 2020 has started great for Andom’s campaign, thanks in part to being featured on Humans of New YorkFrom January 1-31, the campaign has received over 4,100 individual donations, raising nearly $100,000, and more than 100 volunteers have reached out to the campaign. Although Andom’s campaign has been gaining traction for months, being featured on Humans of New York brought a lot of attention to the financial difficulties of running a campaign and to the platform.

“When I was stopped by Humans of New York, I didn’t imagine that their inclusion of me would lead to such an outpouring of support and encouragement,” said Andom Ghebreghiorgis. “Donors from all across the country relayed how much my story and our campaign’s vision resonated with them. We are excited by the people-powered growth of our campaign, and, as we head into petitioning later this month, look forward to showing the deep support we have and are continuing to build in the district.”

Andom Ghebreghiorgis grew up in Mount Vernon, attended Riverdale’s Ethical Culture Fieldston School, Yale University, and City College of NY, becoming a special education teacher. “For my generation of students born after 9/11, all they have known, every year of their life, is war; the threat of climate extinction; and the intractability of wage stagnation, college unaffordability, and income equality,” says Andom.
