Six PMHS seniors—Lily Childs, Kayleigh DiNatale, Rachel Elmer, Anna Larsen, Olivia Min and Morgan Sample—were honored as Marilyn Stiefvater Scholars of the Month at a Zoom meeting held by the club on June 3.

The six were honored at one meeting because the Rotary club had suspended regular meetings since mid March due to the coronavirus.

At the meeting, Rotarians also recognized PMHS Principal Jeannine Clark on her retirement, thanking her for her part in the Scholars of the Month program and for her other service to the Pelham community.

Here are highlights of each student’s achievements meriting their recognition as a Rotary Scholar of the Month:

Lily Childs: Member of the National Honor Society as well as the Science, Math, English and Spanish honor societies. Her extracurricular activities have included Pelham Eliminates Plastics Club, Animal Welfare Club and Spanish Club. She has participated in track and field and cross country. Her volunteer service included trips to Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic to help build houses for families. She plans to attend Cornell in the fall.

Kayleigh DiNatale: Member of the National Honor Society as well as the Science, Math, English and World Language honor societies. Her extracurricular activities have included Indian Culture Club, Chemistry Club and Animal Welfare Club. She was a member of the Varsity Soccer team. Her volunteer service has included Midnight Run, Pelham Summer Fest, Thanksgiving in a Box, Baseline Concussion Testing and the Hutchinson School Book Fair. She plans to attend Villanova in the fall.

Rachel Elmer: Member of the National Honor Society as well as the Science, Math, English and Social Studies honor societies. Her extracurricular activities have included Heath Services Club, Latin Club, YMCA Girls Leadership Program and Peer Tutoring Club. She played on the Varsity softball and field hockey teams. Her volunteer activities have included working with Danny Fund families, as a summer reading volunteer at the Yonkers library and as a Gallery Ambassador at the Norwalk Maritime Aquarium.She plans to attend the University of Chicago in the fall.

Anna Larsen: Member of the National Honor Society as well as the Science, Math, English and World Language honor societies. Her extracurricular activities have included Animal Welfare Club and Pelham Eliminates Plastics Club. She is a sailor in Can One Racing and classic yacht racing. She is on the PMHS Varsity golf team. She won an international photography award in 2018. Her volunteer activities have included assisting with homework at the New Rochelle Boys and Girls Club. She plans to attend Tulane in the fall.

Olivia Min: Member of the National Honor Society as well as the Science, Math, English, Spanish and Social Studies honor societies. She received science awards in competitions in 10th and 11th grades. Her extracurricular activities have included Science Research competitions, Dance Team activities, piano performancesand her own jewelry business.  Her volunteer activities have been with Pelham Children’s Theater, the Mount Vernon Soup Kitchen and Pelham Library’s Pelham Reads “Hidden Figures” event. She plans to attend Haverford College in the fall.

Morgan Sample: Member of the National Honor Society as well as the Math and English honor societies. She was All League and captain for Cross Country and for Winter Track. Her extracurricular activities have included Women’s Empowerment Club, Biology Club and Chemistry Club. Her volunteer activities have been with Habitat for Humanity Club and an animal shelter. She plans to attend Syracuse University in the fall.

In addition to honoring two Scholars of the Month each month during the school year, Rotary Club of the Pelhams awards a scholarship annually to a graduating PMHS senior. This year the scholarship will total $12,000, an increase of $2,000 over the $10,000 that’s been awarded over the last several years. The scholarship is funded by members of the Rotary Club and members of the community. And website for donations is pelhamrotary.com.
