Top 10 socially safe (mainly outside) summer activities to do with friends
The other day, my calendar said that there were four weeks until September. Yes, you read that right. Summer really did go by quickly, and because of Covid, some kids didn’t do many camps or activities with friends. So, here’s a list of ways to solve that problem (while staying distant!). No more awkwardly waving from your front yard; it’s time to experience the rest of summer.
1. Yard games
The first activity has room for creativity and works for many different age groups. You can play cornhole, throw bean bags for tic tac toe and make changes to your favorite games so you can stay socially distant.
2. Picnic
Grab some blankets, lunch and station your blankets six feet apart for this easy activity. You can sit in a park or your own backyard. Also, if you want a way to support local businesses during this difficult time, you can order your meal from a local restaurant.
3. Outdoor movie
This is a great night activity to do with family and friends. You can use a computer or a projector (if you have one). Make sure to bring blankets. For added fun, you can have your friends bring popcorn or snacks to eat during the movie.
4. Netflix Party
This idea is an alternative to an outdoor movie if you aren’t quite ready to hang out with friends in person. Netflix Party is a Chrome extension that allows you to watch movies and chat with friends all on your computer. It is super easy to install and completely free if you have a Netflix account.
5. Bike ride
Biking with friends has become a popular activity for Pelham kids during Covid. It is fun and a way to get some exercise and fresh air. If you get tired of biking, switch it up. Maybe go skateboarding—or take walks around the neighborhood.
6. Chalk art
Sidewalk chalk is another activity that is great for any age. All you need is chalk and a sidewalk to work on. To stay distant, all your friends can work on different squares with their own chalk. You can also do this activity virtually if you would like.
7. Water activities
The seventh idea is flexible depending on what you have. You can swim at a pool, have a water gun or water balloon fight or set up a sprinkler. These activities are an easy way to cool off during hot summer days.
8. Camping in backyard
Pitch a tent, make a fire and roast some marshmallows. You can experience camping in your own backyard. If you want some company, invite friends. To follow guidelines and stay distant, make sure everyone brings their own tent and food.
9. Book club
Having a book club with your friends can be done several ways depending on what you’re comfortable with. You can have meetings in person while being socially distant, or via Zoom or even just texts and emails. It’s a great way to have fun and get your summer reading in before school starts.
10. Bake off
This activity is a great way to get your friends together if you aren’t comfortable with hanging out in person. You can Facetime or host a Zoom with your friends and bake from the comfort of your own kitchen. Need some baking ideas? Click the link here.
