“Health Costs and How to Save Money” will be the topic of a Manor Club Zoom program on Monday, Feb. 8 at 7:30pm featuring Jeanne Pinder of Pelham, founder and CEO of ClearHealthCosts, as she reviews how a simple MRI could cost $300 or $6,200 in the same metro area. Another wide price difference can be a common blood test costing $19 or $522.

In her talk, Ms. Pinder will also discuss how to read medical bills, ask about prices in advance, learn about deductibles, and more.

Her company, ClearHealthCosts, is a journalism startup in New York City that is bringing transparency to the healthcare marketplace by telling people what things cost. It has partnered with big media organizations like CBS News; WNYC public radio in New York and Gothamist.com; The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Daily News and others to report on and crowdsource health prices. Its funding has been from angel investors, and with grants from the New York State Health Foundation; the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the International Women’s Media Foundation (Ford Foundation funds), the Tow Center for Digital Journalism at Columbia University, the Tow-Knight Center for Entrepreneurial Journalism at the City University of New York, the Lenfest Institute and others.

The company’s journalism has won multiple prizes, including the 2019 network public service gold from the Society for Professional Journalists-Sigma Delta Chi with its partners at CBS News.

Ms. Pinder worked at The New York Times as an editor, reporter and human resources executive for nearly 25 years. She took a buyout in 2009, and a year later won a shark-tank type pitch contest at the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism to found ClearHealthCosts.

The talk is open to the public. To register for the Zoom program on Feb. 8 at 7:30pm, send an email to [email protected] and a return email will be sent to the registrant.
