Most of the founding editors and reporters (and shareholders) of the Pelham Examiner.

Fifteen of the 23 stockholders in Pelham Examiner, Inc. attended the company’s first annual shareholder’s meeting Aug. 6 at Rockwells, receiving their share certificates and voting on candidates for the board of directors.

The founders also reviewed the company’s certificate of incorporation and heard management’s discussion of the business from Executive Editor Jack Howard, Deputy Executive Editor Ben Glickman and Managing Editor Francesca Di Cristofano. All three, in different ways, talked about the progress they’ve seen the paper make since it was launched to the public in June 25—at times, the surprising progress.

“You all should be extremely proud of yourselves,” said Glickman. “You’ve accomplished something great in a short amount of time.”

Rich Zahradnik, a newly elected board member, said the paper got off to fast start, publishing its first story three weeks after 13 students held the initial meeting to discuss the project. In six weeks, the Pelham Examiner has posted 176 stories and announcements and reached an average of 1,481 unique individuals each week. Visitors read a total of 46,989 pages during the period.

Zahradnik thanked Pelham attorney Nathan P. Pereira, who handled the incorporation of the Pelham Examiner on a pro bono basis.

Elected to the board of directors were:

  • Caitlin Kindig: PMHS ’17. Former news editor and co-editor-in-chief of the Pel Mel. Second-year student at McGill, where she is news editor of the McGill Tribune.
  • Jack Howard: PMHS ’18. Former intern for the News of Pelham and executive editor of the Pelham Examiner. Attending Bates College in the fall.
  • Claire Atkinson: senior media editor for NBC News.
  • Cathy Taylor: former editor at Ad Age and Adweek, columnist for MediaPost and freelance writer.
  • JoEllen Scully: Pelham resident and mother of staffers Jack and Charlotte.
  • Julie Roche: Pelham resident and co-founder of Burbio.com.
  • Rich Zahradnik: writer.

The seventh stipulation in Pelham Examiner, Inc.’s certificate of incorporation reads: “The corporation shall have a perpetual existence.”

We’re here to stay.
