Dorothy Rock – March 13

Dorothy “Dorrie” Rock of New Rochelle, NY passed away peacefully in her home on March 13, 2021 at the age of 93.

Dorothy was born and raised in Pelham, NY. The youngest of Martin and Esther Devitt’s five children, she attended St. Catherine’s School and Pelham Memorial High School. Soon after graduation, she married her high school sweetheart Richard Rock at St. Catherine’s Church. They lived in Pelham where they started a family before eventually settling in New Rochelle.

While Dorrie spent most of her life raising children she was also very active. After losing her husband at a young age, she joined the workforce and became a bookkeeper. In her free time Dorrie loved to play sports. Softball, tennis, paddle tennis and ping pong were among her favorites. She also enjoyed watching Met games and playing lawn or board games with her family — especially Password, and many an afternoon was spent proudly cheering on her children, then grand and then great-grandchildren in the gyms and on the field. Dorrie’s greatest joys came from spending time with her family.

Dorrie also had a passion for music and singing and was blessed with a beautiful voice. Though shy and introverted by nature, she became a member of the Sweet Adelines/Golden Apple acapella chorus group and later became a founding member of Sunnyside, a barbershop quartet. Dorrie loved performing with these groups, especially as part of Sunnyside where she became fondly known as “Madame,” their beloved baritone.

Dorrie was one of a kind, an amazing woman who was loved by all and will be remembered most for her warmth and graciousness.

Dorrie was pre-deceased by her son Douglas Rock and is survived by her children: Richard (Susan) Rock, Jr., Donna (Ken) McAlley, Diane (Ivar) Hyden, Dennis (Alice) Rock, Timothy Rock, Peter Rock and Robin (Chris) Rock-Lynch.

She will be sorely missed by her 15 grandchildren; Ken Jr., Jillian, Jenn, Abby, Meghan, Christopher, Brian, Amanda, Rebecca, Briana, Dylan, Matthew, Lukas, Logan and Landon, as well as her 14 great-grandchildren; Ricky, Gracie, Amelia, Sophie, Louisa, Robbie, Jackson, Mila, Evie, Hayden, Ryder, Hunter, Isla and Declan.

A celebration of Dorothy’s life will take place at the Pelham Funeral Home located at 64 Lincoln Avenue, Pelham, NY on Friday, March 18th from 4-8pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at Holy Family Church located at 83 Clove Road, New Rochelle, NY on Saturday, March 20th at 10:45am.
