Icy conditions cause 35-car pile-up on Hutchinson River Parkway with multiple minor injuries
Icy conditions caused a pile-up of approximately 35 cars on the Hutchinson River Parkway near Pelhamdale Avenue on Wednesday morning, shutting down the parkway.
Firefighters and police were already on the scene for an existing accident when “35 vehicles began to slide and collide with each other,” according to a post on the Facebook page of the Pelham Professional Firefighters Local 2213. Engine 5 from the Pelham Fire Department responded alongside the town paramedic car and personnel from the Pelham Manor and other departments.
The incident was declared a “mass casualty incident” due to numerous injuries, although all were minor, the post said.
The Pelham school district started out with a two-hour delay because of the weather and switched to “asynchronous learning,” which is eduspeak for doing online assignments.
“Unfortunately, the residual traffic and road closures have made travel extremely difficult and left many of our staff unable to make it to work,” said acting Superintendent Dennis Lauro in an email.

Sheesh! People don’t listen when they tell us to slow down, icy roads. They drive faster and more carelessly. What happened to good old common sense? Stay home and prevent accidents, please!
