Jan 17, 2021 – This February, Progressive Women of Pelham will be joining forces once again with Tha Brown Urban Mother Partners (Tha BUMP) to celebrate Black History Month with “BLACK HISTORY IN THE MAKING” – a month-long content series about those making history in our community. The groups are calling for nominations of candidates who either live and/or work in Pelham and/or Mount Vernon. Nominated candidates can include individuals, groups, businesses, or organizations that exemplify Black Leadership through ideas and innovation, Black Excellence through success and accomplishment, or Black Joy through expression and talent in all forms of visual arts, theater, dance, sports, writing, and music.

“After the success of last year’s initiative, we are delighted to be partnering once again with Mount Vernon’s Cynthia Turnquest-Jones and THA BUMP to honor outstanding members of our community and celebrate Black History in the Making,” said PWP Executive Board Member Solange Hansen. “It’s especially meaningful to be issuing this call for nominations on this national holiday honoring the Black leadership of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.”

“We are carrying a torch of hope and love between Mount Vernon and Pelham,” added Tha BUMP founder Cynthia Turnquest-Jones.  “Embracing our fears. Building our courage. Triumphing over hate. Enjoy our vignettes of Love Power.”

“When we think of being the change we need to see in the world, we think of ourselves – but it takes a community!” shared Mina Simone, PMHS ‘15 and PWP Advisory Council member overseeing this year’s “Black History in the Making” series. “Pelham and Mount Vernon are creating new legacies for Black History by showing the real people making changes in our personal lives and communities. I am super excited to see this tradition continue so we can come together and celebrate each other!”

A new “Black History In The Making” honoree will be featured on our website each day throughout the month of February, as well as shared on PWP’s Facebook Page and Instagram accounts, Tha BUMP’s social media channels, and other local Facebook groups.
