Pelham 5th graders send 400 Valentine cards to eight Danny Fund kids fighting life-threatening diseases

Fifth grade students in Pelham’s elementary schools recently made more than 400 original Valentine cards for eight children the Danny Fund is supporting as they fight life-threatening diseases.
For the cards, students came up with inspirational quotes, some told jokes, and others drew beautiful pictures. Many told the Danny Fund kids how brave they were and that they were true super-heroes! Students designed the cards using stickers and their imaginations to think of things that would help to put a smile on the faces of the Danny Kids. The kids consist of four girls and four boys ranging in ages from 2-15 the Danny Fund is assisting while they are dealing with hospital stays, doctors and treatments.
Bags of card making supplies had been dropped off to Colonial, Hutchinson, Prospect and Siwanoy schools by Danny Fund volunteers.
Each of the eight Danny Fund kids is receiving a Valentine bag filled with cards and now can spend many hours reading those cards and decorating a hospital room or a bedroom with the get-well-wishes. The cards were not only fun for the Danny Fund kids, but they also spread joy and hope to their families. The identities of the Danny Fund kids are kept confidential.
“Thank you fifth graders, teachers and principals for participating in this important project,” said Kathy Potocki, chairman of the Valentine card project.
The Danny Fund is a 100% volunteer-run organization founded in 1993 and based in Pelham. Its mission is to provide families of critically ill or injured children (under the age of 21) with financial, emotional, and/or advocacy assistance during their period of crisis. Its goal is to support the diverse needs of these families so that their child’s care can remain their primary focus. Because of Covid-19, Danny Fund did not hold a fundraiser last year and is postponing this year’s fundraiser until October. Donations may be made at any time at its website (www.thedannyfund.org).
