After the retirement of Nancy Romm, fondly known in association with Nancy’s Good Humor ice cream truck, Pelham Together was donated the old truck and got to work on carrying the legacy. Pelham Together’s ‘Pelicones’ ice cream truck is youth-run and attends block parties, sports games, and reserved events.

In the early stages of Covid, Pelham Together was unable to meet all together and spent much time waiting on what to do, with questions such as how the truck would operate safely and if serving food was safe at all.  Nevertheless, this May will mark the Pelicones’ third season of operation, now without as many Covid restrictions.

Pelham Together implemented measures such as gloves and masks, social distancing, and strictly attending events with limited capacities. Covid has also made it more challenging for many teens to get jobs, so staffing was finite and complicated.

Despite setbacks in the past, Pelham Together’s executive director Laura Caruso believes that the Pelicones truck will return to operating as normally as possible, with the truck planning to attend sports games, day-camp dismissals, and larger gatherings than ever before.  Additionally, the increased event attendance of the truck will rake in more revenue than the Pelicones truck has seen in previous years, therefore opening up more opportunities for teens to work for the Pelicones truck.

Caruso says that working with the truck is a “Great experience and opportunity to work with the adults in the town” and that Pelham Together is “always looking for people to join.”

The truck’s first two seasons had been confined due to Covid, but Pelham Together’s gradual re-opening of the truck’s operations could make this upcoming season the best one yet.
