PMHS scholars help elementary students in English as new language program

Editor’s note: This press release was provided by the Pelham Union Free School District. The Pelham Examiner publishes press releases in the form received as a service to the community.

Members of the PMHS International Language Leaders Club are lending a helping hand to elementary school students in the English as a New Language (ENL) program. Working alongside Meryeme Gashi, ENL Coordinator, Teacher Rosemarie Cipollone and Teaching Assistant Margaret Ann Spagnuolo, the high school students travel to Hutchinson each Tuesday afternoon to help younger elementary school students with their homework and simultaneously build English language skills. Some of the native languages spoken by our students include Chinese, Sinhala, Albanian, Hebrew, Spanish, Czech, Russian and Italian. In addition to helping the elementary school students, the high school students, who are current or former English language learners themselves, earn credit toward their PMHS Community Service hours requirement.
