Hutchinson River Parkway up for listing as national and state historic place after Village of Pelham Manor filing
The Hutchinson River Parkway looks to meet the criteria for listing on the National Register of Historic Places as well as New York State’s register following a submission by the Village of Pelham Manor to the state.
According to a press release from Pelham Manor, over the past several months the state historic preservation office (SHPO) “evaluated the criteria submitted within our application and determined that the (parkway) appears to meet the criteria for listing on the state and national registers of historic places” in areas including “transportation, recreation, landscape architecture and engineering as a representative, intact example of an early twentieth century, limited-access, automobile parkway. SHPO is in the process of updating their Cultural Resource Information System to reflect this determination.”
“The New York State Department of Transportation, as the owner with jurisdiction over the parkway, has also been involved in this process and has issued a concurrence letter,” said the release. “SHPO and NYSDOT will be working together to develop a comprehensive inventory of contributing features to this historical designation.”
Village officials originally applied for the designation in June 2022, and a final submission was submitted on Jan. 2.
“The Village of Pelham Manor is proud of our historical roots in Westchester County,” said the press release. “One of the components within our community that we feel holds significant historical value is the Hutchinson River Parkway.”

What a lovely idea. It is a beautiful parkway and is deserving of such acknowledgement. Now, that being said, it would be nice if the Village of Pelham Manor would put the necessary effort in to getting the sound barrier along said parkway that has been requested of them for the past several years. While it is a beautiful parkway, it also unhealthily noisy and detrimental to the mental and physical well-being of those who live along it, as has been presented to the the board and local representatives, on many occasions, with well documented facts and figures. I would be happy to present all pertinent information to anyone who is interested. This is a devestating matter that finally NEEDS to be addressed, in a much more serious way than it has been in the past.
