The PMHS volleyball team on Thursday defeated Walter Panas, class A New York State champions for the last two years, winning by 3 sets to 1.

The victory was the Pelican’s first over Panas in at least four years. In fact, Panas knocked PMHS out of the 2016 Section 1 finals.

PMHS started out slow, losing the first set 14-25. But the Pelican’s play improved, and they stayed just ahead in the second set right until the end, winning 25-21. They battled Westchester’s volleyball giant toe-to-toe over the final two sets, winning nail-biters 26-24 and 26-24.

Panas showed they could be beat on Sept. 17, when Nyack ended their 54-win streak. PMHS handed them their second loss and perhaps put a marker down as contenders for top honors this season.
