To the editor,
We are writing in support of George Latimer in the Democratic primary for the 16th Congressional District. For more than 35 years, George Latimer has worked in the service of his neighbors and constituents. He is a hardworking politician who has a demonstrated history of being able to reach across the aisle, establish common ground and do the work of legislating. This is a skill that is sorely lacking in so many of today’s representatives, who seem to prefer public bickering and publicity stunts to doing the actual work of governing. He has served as an effective member of the Rye City Council, Westchester County Board of Legislators, the New York State Assembly, New York State Senate and now as Westchester County executive.
As chairman of the board of legislators, he oversaw the creation of the Westchester Human Rights Commission, smoke-free workplace laws and waste haulers laws. He is respected and regarded as bipartisan, transparent and accessible. While in the the assembly, he sponsored important environmental legislation to protect Long Island Sound and authored more than 20 new laws. As county executive, he has cut taxes, stabilized our county’s fiscal standing and bond rating and championed and executed important infrastructure improvements, including Memorial Field on Sandford Blvd., which is no longer the barren eyesore it had been for so many years. He has worked on important social justice reforms, including the Police Reform and Reimagining Task Force, banning gay conversion therapy, and signing the Anti-Wage Theft Law and the Wage History Anti-Discrimination Law. He has worked to convert the Bee-Line bus fleet to electric power and modernize all county facilities for an environmentally responsible future.
With Latimer as our representative, we will be assured of a hard-working, pragmatic, progressive representative who will do the work to advance democratic values in our federal government. Our district, and even more importantly, our country needs George Latimer in Congress.
