Project Community is Pelham’s only volunteer organization that is spearheaded by expert healthcare professionals, dedicated to support family life by providing six innovative, original programs to tackle relevant issues with insights and answers… for teens, tweens and kids with special needs.
Right on the heels of its ever-popular Color Run event in May – which drew over 600 participants – Project Community is diligently active throughout the entire year. One of these visionary programs is called Project CHILDD – the acronym for Community Help In Learning about Developmental Disabilities. It’s where children and teens are given the chance to socialize and to use art to express themselves creatively. Professional art instruction supports therapeutic expression and builds self-esteem.
On June 1 at Maestro’s Catering Hall, Project Community sponsored its annual Art Show & Luncheon for these brave children and their parents. Each special needs child was in attendance as they proudly displayed their artistic creativity… and were presented awards for their hard work and courage.
The event was a huge success, filled with inspiration, hope, and love. Credit goes to Project Community’s Joanne Rooney, RN who spearheads the Project CHILDD program, Gina Flynn, Laura Zuzulo, teen mentor volunteers, and Courtney Donohoe, seen here in the photo with her son Evan. Special thanks to Elizabeth Donofrio who graciously provided the food, space and service at Maestro’s. And as always, we are forever indebted to Montefiore Children’s Hospital for providing the space for the Bronx Project CHILDD Program.
