[Pelham, NY, July 10, 2024] – Pelicones, the beloved local, youth-run ice cream truck, is celebrating five years of serving up smiles and delicious treats to the community. Except, this vintage truck has been a part of Pelham for a lot longer than that and was known as Nancy’s truck. The previous owner, Nancy Romm, a town icon, went from sports games, to practices, to front-yard parties, covering every neighborhood in Pelham selling Good Humor ice cream for over 40 years, creating lasting memories for generations of Pelham families.
In memory of Nancy, who recently passed away, Pelicones has dedicated our new license plate in her honor, NANCY1. Our truck will proudly display “NANCY 1″ for years to come ensuring her legacy lives on in Pelham.
Laura Caruso, Executive Director of Pelham Together, the non profit organization that oversees this youth-run business and entrepreneurship program, said, “Pelicones has not only brought joy to so many young children in Pelham, it has given work experience and fostered entrepreneurship in over 100 Pelham teenagers over the last 5 years. Teens often return to tell us that Pelicones is one of the first experiences they talk about in interviews with future employers; it’s so special to see how Nancy’s legacy continues, and we are thrilled to honor her in this way.” Teen managers and staff run all aspects of the business, guided by a set of adults committed to their success. For many, this is one of their first local jobs. Marketing Manager and recent PMHS graduate, Jacquelyn Pennetta, states, “This experience has been incredibly valuable to me as it has taught me the importance of creativity, teamwork, and management. While looking back on photos taken at different Pelicones events for our marketing campaigns, I can really feel the sense of community in Pelham.”
Many of the Pelicones staff grew up getting ice cream from Nancy, which has left a special place for her in their hearts. Madelyn Turner, a Pelicones staff member said, “I am so glad I was able to join the Pelicones team because the truck was an essential part of my childhood.” Along with many other teens in Pelham, Madelyn shares a common memory of eating Nancy’s ice cream after a long Pelham Recreation soccer game. “Honoring Nancy through this new license plate keeps her memory alive in Pelham,” stated Turner.
The Pelicones truck, with its brand new plate, is available for parties and events from May through through mid-October. Supporting the truck supports teen entrepreneurship while upholding this special town tradition.
