Vibrant colors, diverse shapes and numerous quotations covered the walls at the Pelham Art Center during the opening event July 18 of the “Candescence” summer exhibition dedicated to late executive director Charlotte Mouquin.
The exhibition title was chosen by Mouquin’s close friend Rachel Krause because it signifies “light that emanates from or as if from great heat” and reflects Mouquin’s vibrant personality and enduring legacy, according to a sign at the exhibition.
“Candescence honors and commemorates Charlotte Mills Mouquin Voznesenskaya,” Gallery and Events Manager Rosa Van Zandt said. “The exhibition features the work of over 30 artists from several different communities that Charlotte, and her bright, artistic vision, has powerfully impacted throughout her life. The opening reception was a very special evening full of love, light and art.”
Van Zandt said Mouquin’s vivacious energy is always seen in her artwork, with themes of human connections and nature being present in many of her paintings.
The exhibition also showcases artwork by fellow artists inspired by Mouquin as well as numerous quotations from friends and colleagues that celebrate her personality and spirit.
Gail Skudera, in one of the quotes displayed on the wall, said, “This is what I remember most about Charlotte: Her amazing ability to turn a room of people who may not know each other into a circle of friendship and conversation about art and what means the most to them.”
Curators Van Zandt, Paula Wood and Lisa Koonce all spoke during the event, elaborating on Mouquin’s vision for revitalizing the Pelham Art Center and discussing how the center’s members successfully brought this vision to life.
“One prominent theme that emerged through this project was Charlotte’s leadership in the form of nurturing,” said Wood. “She always shared her world, her connections, her time and her physical presence—as a curator, an educator, a friend and a mother. The organic and luminous way Charlotte brought people and art together was unique and beautiful. We will see her generosity and inspiration in many generations of artists yet to emerge. ‘Candescence’ gives us a sense of Charlotte’s impact, and we thank her, her family and her incredible community for making it possible.”
“Candescence” is open to the public until Aug. 30 at the Pelham Art Center.
