To the editor:
We have recently moved to Pelham from the Seattle, Washington, area. We believe that the electoral system there is highly democratic and maximizes getting out the vote.
We are hugely supportive of moving the Pelham Manor’s village election from March to November. There are many practical reasons; however, the main reason is that it is simply more democratic by creating better representation of our local citizens. It is a known fact that primary elections have lower voter turnout. This allows certain populations to game the system to forward their agenda versus the will of the body politic. By moving this vote to November, we will improve democracy in the Manor.
In addition, there are many other important reasons, including reduced expenditures and better systems for running the election as it will be run by the county board of elections. Finally, in the spirit of democracy (or lack thereof), the village manager (who runs the election), actually reports to the trustees, which questions the checks and balances in the system.
Moving the election to November will benefit all citizens of the Manor by improving the democracy in a more fair manner throughout the community. We should all strive to live in this type of democracy, especially as democracy is under threat throughout the world.

Welcome to Pelham! I don’t think you’ve been informed about all that we’ll lose with a move to the November cycle. Give yourself a year or two living here to better appreciate how a well-run Village stays that way: excellent services, no debt and we really try go keep national politics out of the local issues. Moving the election will do the opposite. Most local elections in NYS are held in March so citizens can focus on local. In fact, many Westchester municipalities who moved their elections to November are seeking to move them back.

Welcome to The Manor! It is admirable that you are both getting involved in local politics and issues after being here since May. However, given you have never voted in or experienced a village election since moving here, it is difficult to take any of these arguments seriously. You argue that ‘certain populations (can) game the system to forward their agenda versus the will of the body politic.” Oddly, the Democrats (the same group running this campaign and who sued the village) who ran for the Board of Trustees this past March publicly announced their candidacies a day before the caucus even took place! Not exactly very democratic.

Appreciate the perspective, but that is not reality, The reality is, Pelham Manor is a small village , We have the right to be governed in a small town aspect, versus the way a bigger city or town operates. This is the History of our Village and you really wonder why anyone would want to change this history, Why are we Pelham Manor? What encouraged you to live here? As a business owner and resident of color in Pelham Manor, who grew up here, I have never actually seen a Mayor here or board member of color. I have spent a majority of my life here and also have decided to raise my family here and am very active in this community. If I decided to run for Mayor or a board seat sooner than later, This forces me to have to address my small town local issues with the likes of bigger political extreme objectives, I would have to put my name on a ballot with the likes of Kamala Harris and Donald Trump?? Hardly seems fair, I would be drowned out by the “Popular” candidate line. Everyone just votes the row, statistically that is how is goes. There are bigger issues in this community we need to address. I would say pass on this for now, more thought needs to be done.

Chris, personally, I think you’d crush Trump or Harris! … But I get your point. I think our neighbors can navigate the difference, but one of the things I love about Pelham is we can disagree and still be friends. Enjoy the day!

Welcome to Pelham! Love your letter and clarity of thought!
“By moving this vote to November, we will improve democracy in the Manor.” Exactly.
Thank you!
