To the editor:
As a registered Democrat, I will be proudly casting my vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the upcoming presidential election. However, I am writing today to express my opposition to Proposition 3, which suggests moving our local elections to coincide with national elections. I will be voting “no” on this issue.
The facts show that when local elections are held alongside national elections, voters are more likely to cast their ballots along party lines. In my opinion, this shift can overshadow the important local issues and candidates that need our careful attention. When local elections stand on their own, I believe voters are better able to focus on the issues and the individuals running for office, making more thoughtful and community-specific decisions without the distractions of national political noise.
As a 27-year resident of Pelham Manor, I have never felt inconvenienced by making an extra trip to the polls. In fact, I believe that our community is worth it. The dedication of our volunteers, trustees, mayors and managers over the years has made Pelham Manor a truly special place to live and raise a family. It’s easy to forget, but this is why many of us chose to move here in the first place.
I encourage you to consider the impact of Proposition 3 and to vote with our community’s unique needs in mind.
