(October 24, 2024 – Pelham, NY) It was 40 years ago that Project Community began as the Nurses Network in Pelham when a small group of nurses partnered with schools and other community groups to provide healthcare knowledge — rather than healthcare directions. The mission? Create a network of caring people to serve the needs of our communities to tackle health issues at a grassroots level, through visionary teen programs that address binge drinking, sexual assault, anxiety and self-awareness. For those with special needs, there are YOU & ME, and Project C.H.I.L.D.D.
Project C.H.I.L.D.D (Community Help In Learning about Developmental Disabilities) – was their very first initiative for children and young adults with special needs, and still remains the gold standard by which other communities have emulated.
This successful program is held at both The Pelham Art Center, and the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore throughout the year. On October 19th, five families were treated to an inspiring afternoon of art projects, music and plenty of fun snacks at Montefiore. According to Joanne Rooney, NP, who spearheads the Project C.H.I.L.D.D events at Montefiore, “Children with special needs may face social challenges, including isolation or difficulty building relationships. We’re so proud that Project Community’s nurses and volunteers can provide the much-needed support that helps these kids develop critical social and emotional skills, improving their quality of life and ability to connect with others. And we’re always looking for more volunteers!”
So if you’re a high school student in junior or senior year, looking to make a positive impact in the lives of kids with special needs, please consider volunteering for Project Community’s Project C.H.I.L.D.D.
