Scouts in Pelham Troop 1 have been committed to community service and outdoor adventure this fall. The Scouts have been actively involved in a range of activities, from volunteering at local events to challenging themselves on outdoor expeditions.
Giving Back to the Community
The troop kicked off the fall season by volunteering to run the bounce house at the Thunderbird Games, the largest Cub Scout event in the Northeast. The Scouts partnered with the Miracle League of Westchester to spread joy at their Very Special Halloween event. They engaged with children by handing out candy and participating in games, creating lasting memories. The troop also played a vital role in the Pelham Half Marathon and 10K, managing two water stations to provide hydration for the runners.
Conservation and environmental stewardship are cornerstones of Troop 1’s activities. Scouts mucked in the Hutchinson River for the cleanup day removing tires, shopping carts, and car parts from the river, adjacent to Glover Field. They joined forces with EcoPel and the Pelham Vine Squad to tackle invasive species on public lands bordering the Hutchinson River.
To honor veterans, the troop participated in the Pelham Veteran’s Day Ceremony and a hike on the Veterans Trail of Honor at Lasdon Park. This poignant hike allowed them to reflect on the sacrifices of those who have served their country.
Embracing Outdoor Adventure
Beyond community service, Troop 1 has immersed themselves in outdoor adventures. They embarked on a backcountry hike and camping trip on the Appalachian Trail in Harriman State Park, challenging themselves physically and mentally. The scouts also honed their survival skills during a camping trip where they built shelters and practiced outdoor cooking techniques. In preparation for a high adventure trip next summer, a group of Scouts completed their scuba dive training in open waters at Lake Hydra. These experiences fostered self-reliance and a deep appreciation for nature.
Pelham Troop 1 is dedicated to making a positive impact on the community and sharing their passion for the outdoors, with more camping and service opportunities ahead. Troop 1 has been active in Pelham for over 100 years and provides leadership training, outdoor education, and service opportunities for children from 6th grade until age 18. During the school year, the Troop meets every Thursday at 7:00 pm in the Church of Christ the Redeemer at 1415 Pelhamdale Ave, Pelham, NY 10803. Boys ages 11-17 are welcome to join or come to a meeting to learn more.
