Joan Cunningham Scully, of North Branford, CT, formerly of Pelham Manor, NY, Pinehurst, NC, and Naples, FL, passed away on Monday, December 30, 2024, at 97.
Joan is survived by four of her six children: Keith Scully (Mariellen) of Lutherville, MD; Joan Scully Randall of Mount Vernon, NY; Mary Scully Bissell (Lawrence) of West Hartford, CT; and Barbara McKeon Scully of New York, NY. She is also survived by her daughters-in-law, Anette Scully of Roswell, GA, and Ethel O. Scully of Stamford, CT, as well as the family nun, Sister Grace Edna Rowland of Patchogue, NY. Joan was a loving grandmother (“Gram”) to Whitney (Michael), Brynn (Christian), Caitlin, Meghan (Edward), William, Ryan (Lauren), Micaela, Molly, Griffin (Devon), Michael, and Matthew. In addition, she leaves behind eleven great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and two beloved sisters-in-law, Mary Ann and Patricia. Joan was predeceased by her husband, Vincent (“Vin”) Joyce Scully; and their sons, Jay Scully of Roswell, GA and Kevin Scully of Bronxville, NY.
Joan was born in New York City, NY, on August 19, 1927, to Margaret and William Cunningham and was the older sister to the late Dolores (“Jinx”) Green of Scituate, MA.
Joan was a proud graduate of Hillhouse High School (1944) and Albertus Magnus College (1948). She met Vin at Bayview Beach in Milford, CT, where Vin worked as a lifeguard while Joan enjoyed sunbathing. One of Joan’s proudest moments was being crowned Queen of the Junior Prom at Vin’s Holy Cross College. The perfect couple married on December 31, 1949, and enjoyed a wonderful life together for 46 years. They raised their family in Pelham Manor, where Joan served as the President of the Manor Club and was a member of the International Garden Club and the Pelham H.S. Booster Club. She always welcomed her children’s friends to join the Scully’s for dinner at her insistence. After Vin’s retirement, the couple moved to Pinehurst, where Joan spent 30 happy years. A lifelong lover of sunshine, she enjoyed spending winters in Naples, perfecting her tan, and hosting holiday parties with friends at Palm Bay Villas. Joan was an incredible knitter, a voracious reader, and possessed a steel trap memory that was not to be tested. She never met an ice cream sundae or baked treat that she could not finish.
Relatives and friends are invited to a Mass on Saturday, January 4, at 10:00 AM at Saint Mary Roman Catholic Church, 70 Gulf St, Milford, CT 06460. Interment will follow at Saint Mary Cemetery, Buckingham Ave., Milford. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Connecticut Hospice.
