Ten seniors studying AP Art at Pelham Memorial High School had their work featured in the annual “Young Artist” exhibition that ran from Feb. 9 through March 2 at the Katonah Museum of Art.
The “Young Artist” exhibition, in its 42nd year, displayed more than 350 pieces from seniors attending approximately 40 high schools throughout the region.
“It’s a special opportunity for [PMHS students] to see the work of all the nearby counties and how far they’ve all come as artists,” said PMHS AP Art teacher Devon Fallon.
The PMHS students featured in the exhibition included Renee Ai, Teddy Creutz, Elena Getz, Sade Jacobs, Oliver Lavallee, Venice Mancuso, Lark Martin, Sydney Paulose, Julianna Riviello and Henna Wei.
“We all get to pick which pieces we want to be in the show,” said Sade Jacobs, a PMHS senior. “I just thought this one was a good representation of my style as a whole.”
Jacobs selected their acrylic on canvas piece tilted “Bromance” for the exhibition. The piece highlighted a friendship.
Other artists also took inspiration from friendships, including Elena Getz, who chose an oil on canvas painting titled “The Pigeon” for the Katonah exhibition. Getz was inspired by a friend of hers who she feels has the aura of a pigeon.
The “Young Artist” exhibition provides a unique opportunity for students to act as the behind-the-scenes creators of an art show. Students perform the roles of curator, graphic designer, exhibition designer and art installer. Although no Pelham students took on these jobs this year, they have done so in the past.
