What: Left Behind is a compelling new documentary that tells the story of a group of dedicated mothers who come together to establish New York City’s first public school for dyslexic students. This critical effort unfolds in the nation’s largest school district, shedding light on the challenges faced by families who lack access to the educational support needed for dyslexic children to thrive.
Why: Dyslexia affects 1 in 5 children globally, yet while 20% of the population has this learning difference, an alarming 48% of incarcerated individuals are dyslexic. In New York City, where 70% of students are Black and Brown, approximately 200,000 children struggle without adequate resources or specialized education. Left Behind showcases the urgency of addressing this learning difference, as Kareem Weaver, head of the NAACP’s Education Committee in Oakland, calls it “the defining civil rights issue of our time.
Special Event: Join us for a special Q&A session after the screening with Director Anna Toomey and one of the inspiring mothers featured in the film, who helped lead the fight for change in the New York City public school system. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to hear their powerful stories and insights firsthand.
