The Sock ‘n’ Buskin’s production of the musical “Urinetown,” which ran this weekend at Pelham Memorial High School, is set in a town where people have to pay to use the restroom. The Broadway hit tells the story of what happens when one resident begins to question the status quo. Jokes and dance numbers provide the backdrop for social commentary on greed and individual rights.
“It’s cool to see how much time and effort goes into shows, and it’s really rewarding seeing how it all comes together,” said Anna Shiels, a student who was one of the production stage managers.
From the actors to the lighting to the set, dozens of students contributed to the production.
“No show is driven by only one person, and it takes an ensemble to create art,” said Lucette Ow, who played Penelope Pennywise. “I am very grateful to have been surrounded by such a hardworking community all these years.”
PMHS teachers Neil Schleifer and Thomas Beck have directed Sock ‘n’ Buskin shows for many years. This was Schleifer’s final show at the school as he will retire at the end of this year.
In the program, Schleifer wrote, “As I reflect on the many acts, scenes and moments we’ve shared—filled with both scripted and unscripted moments—I’m proud to have played a role here.”

My husband and I saw Urinetown yesterday. What an impressive production! The acting, singing, costuming and staging was Broadway quality! Congrats to the cast, crew and directors for the memorable performance!
