To the editor:
Siwanoy Elementary School has fantastic programs, whip-smart students and impeccable curb appeal. While all of that is amazing, there is a severe blemish on its reputation—there is currently no way for someone who uses a wheelchair to enter the building. Even if such an individual were to somehow make their way inside, they may not be able to move between rooms or floors or even access the bathroom. In 2025, this is unfortunate, unfair and unacceptable.
But we can change that! On May 20, voting “Yes” on Propositions 1 and 2 will move a long-needed project forward. Finally, Siwanoy would be made accessible to all as required by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). This achievement in fairness also comes cheap. There is an average tax impact of just several hundred dollars annually, due to begin in a few years.
While some have voiced opposition to moving forward, it is simple—you have an opportunity on Tuesday to make Siwanoy a place all can enjoy. Will you?
