Four Pelham Memorial High School seniors—Sasha Herzog, Matthew Johnson, Emma Bier, and Kate Feldmanh—were honored as Marilyn Stiefvvater Scholars of the Month for April and May by Rotary Club of the Pelhams at a recent luncheon.
Introduced by PMHS Principal Sean Llewellyn, a member of Rotary, were were:
Aexandra (“Sasha”) Herzog—a member of the National Honor Society and four additional academic honor societies, as well as a National Merit Finalist. Sasha was also one of the only one-quarter of one percent of students in the country to receive a perfect score on her ACT exam. As a student in the Science Research program, Sasha has earned special awards at the Regeneron Westchester Science and Engineering Fair, and she is particularly interested in marine biology and neuroscience. Sasha has also worked as a summer intern at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. She is also a member of the Creative Writing Club and an award winning participant in Science Olympiad, and she has played the clarinet for nine years. Alexandra is a member of the Varsity Tennis team, having played since ninth grade, and she has volunteered each year for the Midnight Run as well as as a teacher at the Westchester Jewish Center. Congratulations.
Matthew Johnson—a member of the National Honor Society and five additional academic honor societies, and he has been recognized each year for his achievement on the National Italian Exam. He is a member of the Young Republicans Club and the Stock Market Investment Club, and he plays varsity football and rugby. Matthew is an Eagle Scout, and for his Eagle Scout Project he conducted restoration work at the New Rochelle YMCA. In his spare time, Matthew enjoys golf, basketball, camping, and fishing.
Emma Bier—a member of the National Honor Society and five academic honor societies, and an AP Scholar with Distinction. As a student in the Science Research Program, Emma earned an Honorable Mention in behavioral and Social Science at the Westchester Science and Engineering Fair. She is a member of the Mental Health Awareness Club, Social Media Manager for the Operation Smile Club, and she participates in Senior Pen Pals. Emma has been a four year starter on Varsity Lacrosse, All League in Varsity Field Hockey, and member of the Varsity Track Team. Outside of school, Emma has volunteered with students with developmental disabilities, coached youth lacrosse, and been a camp counselor.
Kate Feldman—a National Merit Commended Scholar, AP Scholar with Distinction, and member of the National Honor Society and five additional academic honor societies. As someone very interested in the arts, Kate has worked as an Assistant Art Teacher at the Pelham Art Center and as an intern, an Assistant Teacher for Pelham Recreation which included art and digital media classes, and as an Intern at Plaster Palace. Kate also plays volleyball and has volunteered as an algebra and geometry tutor.
In addition to recognizing PMHS seniors during the school year as scholars of the month, Rotary awards a $20,000 scholarship to a graduating PMHS senior in June.
