Sheldrake Environmental Center: Forest Friends – Fall Mondays

Keep prescoholers active and outdoors with weekly mid-day nature adventures at Sheldrake! Preschool-aged children get to explore Sheldrake’s 60 acres, learning about its inhabitants, making observations about the natural world, and participating in fun nature activities. Our naturalist-led program provides the opportunity for STEM enrichment, connection with nature, and the company of other young enthusiasts, with attention to the seasonal changes from late summer through late fall.

Our Forest Friends:

get first-hand experience with science and nature
learn about birds, insects, seeds, trees, and other natural wonders
enjoy the outdoors as they explore the trails of a 60-acre conservancy
have fun with nature games and other activities
Dates: Mondays – September 19-December 5 (10 sessions; no class on 9/26 or 10/10)

Time: 1:00-2:00 pm

For ages: 3-5 (drop-off program) (children must be at least 3 years old prior to theh start of the program)

Format: This drop-off program will primarily be conducted outdoors in nature, with portions of the time spent indoors. Masks are optional.

Fee: $220 for members, $250 for non-members

Sheldrake Environmental Center: Mommy and Me in Nature – Fall

Spend Thursday mornings at Sheldrake exploring nature with your little one. This weekly class is designed to expose children to the joys of nature at a young age and cultivate a life-long love of the natural world. Weekly adventures for wee ones might include rolling logs in search of insects, sneaking up on the frogs at the frog pond, playing nature games, imitating animals, making nature crafts, and other fun activities. With so many exciting changes throughout the fall, there will be no shortage of observations!

Dates: Thursdays – September 22-December 8 (11 sessions; no class 11/24)

Times: 10:00-11:00 am

Ages: 2-3.5 years old, with an actively participating adult caregiver (children must meet age requirements)

Format: This program will primarily be conducted outdoors in nature. Portions of the time may be spent indoors. Masks are optional.

Fee: $245 for members, $275 for non-members (based on 1 adult + 1 child)

Sheldrake Environmental Center: Drawing Meditations in Nature
Sep 23 @ 9:00 am – Oct 7 @ 10:30 am

Join Sheldrake and One Small Stone for a 3-week series designed to help you see the natural world with fresh eyes. Through both mindfulness and drawing exercises, participants will be guided to more fully observe and experience our natural environment. The program will be co-led by a Sheldrake artist-naturalist and Katy Romita, a mindfulness-meditation instructor, to promote a multi-perspective experience.

Designed for adults, this program reconnects participants to a sense of wonder and playfulness—regardless of how artistic or mindful participants consider themselves.

Each 90-minute session will include:

– Meditation and mindfulness exercises

– Guided exercises for observing and drawing from nature

– Community conversation and connection

– Meaningful time in nature

Dates: Fridays – September 23-October 7 (3 sessions)

Times: 9:00-10:30 am

Location: Sheldrake Environmental Center

Saint Paul’s Church National Park: Tours of the Museum and Historic Church at St. Paul’s

We are pleased to offer tours of the museum and of the historic church, Tuesday to Saturday, at the following times: 10 AM, 12 Noon, 2 PM and 4 PM.  These are reservation tours, of 45-minute duration. In the museum, the current feature exhibition is, “A Special Role: St. Paul’s Church and World War II”.  Other displays explore the American Revolution and the Lenape, the original inhabitants of the St. Paul’s area.  In the church, visitors observe and learn about the significance of original appearance of 1787, and also gain an appreciation of the use of the edifice as a military field hospital during the Revolutionary War. Other features include the 1830 Erben, one of America’s oldest working pipe organs.  Brief recitals are avilable upon request.  Please use the  https://www.recreation.gov website for advance reservations, and please arrive ten minutes before your scheduled tour time.     In addition, self-guided tours of the grounds and historic cemetery, weather and conditions permitting, are available Tuesday to Saturday, 10 AM – 4 PM.  Reservation are not required for the self guided tours of the grounds. She has served as the Integrative Medicine and Healing Touch nurse coordinator at Greenwich Hospital, Greenwich, CT, for the past 15 years. Roberta is certified in relaxation modalities such as Healing Touch, sound healing, yoga and Azul conscious movement, as well as, being a licensed massage therapist. She creates and facilitates self-care serenity spaces and presents healthy lifestyle and mindfulness webinars to the community. Join us for a sewing class just for kids ages 6-9! Solange Bitol Hansen will have sewing machines on hand and projects at the ready. Westchester County Parks Events: Clean River Project

Volunteers entering the river must be age 14 and over. Join this Westchester Parks Foundation’s volunteer citizen science project that addresses  floatable trash one of the three major water quality issues on the Bronx River. Volunteers participate in real science through hands-on experiences. The information we will collect helps find the sources and stops trash from entering the river in the first place. The project engages volunteers by promoting outreach to local businesses whose products end up in and along the river especially uniting messaging around the harm to our waterways caused by non-biodegradable products.No experience is necessary.
