You might be surprised to discover how many bird names you already know. But whether it’s 5 or 50, there’s always more to learn! Birding is both magical and grounding. You get to be outside and tune in to nature with your senses. Learning about the physical characteristics, variations, and behavior of birds can also help with identification, whether through binoculars or up close. Identifying the unique songs of birds that live in the area helps locate and identify them. Enjoy a walk in early spring and take in the many buds beginning as nature springs back to life, make memories with your friends and family with this perfect intergenerational activity, and add to your bird knowledge. Different topics will be addressed at each of the three sessions; attend one, two, or all!
FREE, thanks to a generous grant from Con Edison.

Knowing the pH level of your soil helps to ensure optimal plant growth. It lets you know if any soil adjustments need to be made, it influences what plants are best suited for an area and influences the availability of essential nutrients. Learn how to do a soil pH test yourself using provided soil samples or a sample of your own soil. If you bring your own soil, bring just one cupful taken at the depth of a trowel. Soil samples need to be almost dry in order to be tested, so if the soil is wet when you take a sample, lay it out on paper towels to dry out. You will get information on how to change your soil pH, if it is needed. Visit LasdonPark.org for registration details.

Come join us on a hike through our wildflower garden! Together we’ll learn about the first signs of spring, starting with the fleeting beauty of spring ephemerals, which can only be found when the canopy is bare and the ground first warms. Listen to the songbirds that return as the snow fades, and see the first signs of wildlife return when the ice has retreated.
