Fire erupts in Mount Vernon home; Pelham, Eastchester departments also on scene
An intense fire erupted at a residential home on the corner of E. 5th St. and Garden Ave in Mount Vernon on Monday.
The fire started around 3 p.m. at 436 E. Fifth St. According to Mount Vernon mayor Richard Thomas, an elderly resident of the house had been rescued by Mount Vernon Fire and is currently in the hospital.
“Hopefully, she’s doing better than when we found her,” Thomas said.
The Mount Vernon, Pelham, and Eastchester fire departments were on the scene.
“It being the coldest day of the year, it just goes to show you the extent of the bravery of firefighters in general,” Thomas said. “We have to thank Eastchester,… Pelham and Mount Vernon for all working together to battle this blaze.”
Temperatures in Mount Vernon were in the teens all of Monday afternoon, with wind chill reaching as low as 11 below zero.
