Pelham’s Girl Scout Troop #1662 and the Village of Pelham Police Department co-hosted the second annual community volleyball tournament this Saturday. The event was part of high school senior Kim Rosell’s “Empathy Towards All” project, which aims to strengthen bonds between police departments and their communities.
“The Pelham Varsity Volleyball Team,” captained by Natalia Cherner, was victorious in the tournament, which was held in the Pelham Middle School gymnasium.
Rosell received the Girl Scout Gold Award, the most prestigious honor a girl scout can be awarded, on March 9 for her work with the “Empathy Towards All” project. The final part of Rosell’s project will be the screening of a documentary she created that features interviews with community members and police officers.
The volleyball tournament was not a fundraiser this year. Instead, money from admission fees and team registration went towards complimentary food and beverages for players and spectators and covering the cost for the gymnasium.
Rosell hopes that the tournament will continue annually after she graduates this year. She is currently looking for a successor to take over the project.
