College student in New Rochelle diagnosed with TB
A Monroe College student in New Rochelle has been diagnosed with active Tuberculosis (TB), according to the Westchester County Health Department. The student is no longer on campus and is expected to make a full recovery.
Students and faculty who were exposed were identified by the Health Department and offered free medical evaluation and testing.
TB is spread in the air via the coughing and sneezing of those infected. Symptoms typically include coughing and fever.
According to the New York State Department of Health, Westchester County had 28 diagnosed cases of TB in 2016 alone. This put Westchester at a rate of 3.0 cases per 100,000 residents compared to 1.9 cases per 100,000 residents in New York State as a whole.
