Pelham Rugby loss on Arizona trip preps state champs for next season
In preparation for the upcoming season, the Pelham Rugby Team traveled to Tempe, Arizona, on Feb. 15. The Pelicans, coached by Matt Persanis and led by captain Dylan Lewis, competed against Tempe, the top rugby team in the state of Arizona.
Pelham was only down 12-10 by the end of the first period; however, after injuries plagued the Pelican squad for the remainder of the game, they lost w48-22. In the game itself, six players had to be taken out due to injury, including juniors Aiden Kiernan and Luke Sgobbo, each with dislocated knees.
Pelham Rugby looks to improve on past successes this season after defeating Rye last year to claim the state title. When asked about the upcoming season, junior Juan Carlos Matos was optimistic.
“This loss was rough for the whole team,” said Matos. “But we’re happy to learn from it and carry on for the New York season.”
