Biaggi and Klein agree to TV debate in State Senate Democratic primary race
Alessandra Biaggi and State Sen. Jeff Klein have accepted an offer for a televised debate as each battles to win the Democratic primary in the 34th State Senate District. The 30-minute debate, which will take place Aug. 13 at 9 p.m., will be televised on the local talk show BronxTalk, which airs on BronxNet.
The program will be available on the BronxNet website following the first showing and will be aired regularly until primary day Sept. 13.
“Public debates are an essential part of giving people the information they need to make informed decisions about who they want representing them,” said Biaggi in a statement. “There are major differences between my opponent and me, and the voters deserve to have those differences presented objectively and openly in a debate.”
According to Barbara Brancaccio of the Klein campaign, Klein has officially accepted the offer to debate on BronxTalk. The campaign has yet to release a statement.
BronxTalk has broadcast for almost 24 years, and in that time has hosted more than 55 debates for candidates for public office.
Recently, the Biaggi campaign released a video detailing Biaggi’s motivations for running against incumbent Klein. In the video, Biaggi emphasizes Klein’s former involvement with and leadership of the Independent Democratic Conference (IDC), a group of Democrats in the New York State Senate who voted with the Republicans. The IDC was dissolved on April 16.
