PWP announces endorsements for statewide Democratic primary

Editor’s note:  This press release was provided by Progressive Women of Pelham.

Progressive Women of Pelham voted overwhelmingly to endorse challenger Cynthia Nixon for governor in next month’s statewide New York primary.

“I am thrilled to receive the endorsement of the Progressive Women of Pelham,” Nixon responded. “In Pelham and all across this state, we need leaders who uphold progressive values and fight for bold issues like single-payer health care, universal rent control, and a transition to 100% renewable energy. I’m excited to work with the Progressive Women of Pelham to finally make New York as progressive as its people.”

By wide margins, PWP members also voted to support challenger Jumaane Williams for lieutenant governor and Zephyr Teachout for attorney general.

“Our state should be a progressive beacon for all New Yorkers, but the rights and protections of far too many are under siege by Donald Trump’s divisive White House and the complacent Democrats who helped pave his way,” said Williams. “We need true leadership in Albany to fight back by advancing bold, meaningful reforms that protect the rights we’ve gained and create a New York for the many, not the few. I’m honored to receive the endorsement of the Progressive Women of Pelham and I look forward to working with them as we enter into the final four weeks of this important primary election.”

PWP endorsements require more than 60 percent of the votes cast by its voting membership. Nixon (75%); Williams (72%) and Teachout (79%) all easily exceeded that standard.

Nixon, a longtime activist for education reform, is challenging two-term Gov. Andrew Cuomo for the Democratic nomination. Williams, a three-term New York City councilman, is challenging the incumbent lieutenant governor, Kathy Hochul, and constitutional law expert and former gubernatorial candidate Zephyr Teachout is running in a four-way primary for attorney general.

“I am thrilled to receive the endorsement of Progressive Women of Pelham,” said Teachout. “Their grassroots activism, and push for greater transparency and accountability in government is just what we need to combat the corruption and lawlessness in politics. I look forward to working with them to change the status quo.”

PWP, formed just after the election of President Trump in 2016, is urging the election of more candidates who will protect the rights of all citizens, ensure fully mandated funding of the state’s public schools, and advance progressive causes such as voting and criminal justice reforms.

PWP also voted to endorse three of its members for Democratic county committee positions: Eileen Madden Osmolskis and Kristen Bowes Burke in the Village of Pelham’s Election District 4, and Tara Weishaupl in Pelham Manor’s Election District 10.

“PWP is proud to support these candidates who know that we need to bring New York State up to 21st century standards of excellence,” commented Jennie Driesen, one of the group’s three co-chairs, “especially in the areas of infrastructure, education funding, universal healthcare rights, voting access, and women’s full reproductive freedom. New York should be a state that leads, not one that lags behind, mired in corruption.”

The Democratic primary election will be held Thursday, September 13. Voters can check the validity of their registrations at: www.vote.org.
