The PMHS boys lacrosse team won Monday night against Sleepy Hollow in the second round of the Section 1 playoffs, a major upset for head coach James Rodgers and his program.

Coming into the game, Pelham was the eighth seed in the C bracket with a 10-5 record. Sleepy Hollow was the one seed and undefeated at 15-0. After a dominant victory over Westlake in the first round, Pelham had real momentum going into the game, and it showed.

The contest was hard fought from the beginning, with Pelham only scoring four goals in the first three quarters. However, with a strong fourth quarter, the boys pulled away with a 9-7 victory. Pelham advanced to play four seed Byram Hills in the semifinal on Wednesday.

Goal scorers for Pelham were Eric Elbery, Chris Franchini, Daniel Johnston, Callum Reen, Nick Loria, Teddy Johnson and Matteo Johnson. Junior Daniel Fredbeck and eighth grader Will Dunhill chipped in with some nice assists, while goalie Will White had six saves.

“It was a scrappy game, but we came up with the important ground balls and made the important stops,” said junior captain Daniel Johnston. “With a few cleanups here and there, we feel confident going into the section semifinals.”
