PMHS volleyball clinches league title after five-set thriller against Eastchester
The PMHS volleyball team won a five-set thriller against Eastchester on Thursday to clinch the Section 1 Class A League B title. The game marked the girls’ second win over rival Eastchester this season, completing the sweep over the second seed in the league.
Pelham took an assertive two-set lead right out of the gate before Eastchester roared back, winning the next two sets. In the fifth and final set, the Pelicans eeked out a 25-22 win to secure the victory and the league. Pelham had several key contributors in this one, including senior captain Julia Wall, who had 36 assists, 16 digs and five aces. On top of that, senior Dylan DeJesus had 24 digs and three aces while senior Cami Cornachia had 14 kills.
“We came in knowing how important this game was,” senior Analia Casey said. “Eastchester wants to beat us more than any other team, so they always bring their best fight. There was a huge fan section rooting against us, which motivated us more and helped us finally win.”
Overall, the Pelicans now sit at 12-2 with zero losses in league play. Their final game of the regular season is Friday against Harrison, in which they have the opportunity to cap off the season with an undefeated league record, and most likely clinch the third seed in the Class A playoffs.
