PMHS football gains playoff berth after unbeaten streak ends with 24-13 loss to Rye
The unbeaten streak ended Friday for the PMHS football team in a heartbreaking 24-13 loss to Rye. The game featured two unbeaten teams, in a battle for the league title.
Even with the loss, the Pelicans earned the right to host a sectional playoff game after finishing 6-1 on the season. They will host Brewster High School at Glover Field sometime next week, with the exact date to be determined. The two schools have not squared off this year, but Brewster comes into the game at 5-2 and the third seed from the North Division. The Bears also bring in some momentum after getting their starting quarterback back for the last few games.
Against Rye, Pelham surged during the first half, going into the locker room up 13-7 thanks to touchdowns by senior captains Daniel Fredback and Josiah Campbell. The Rye offense capitalized on Pelham’s mistakes in the second half, and that cost the Pelicans the victory. Rye converted two touchdowns in quick succession off of turnovers. Pelham’s defense did still have a big day, shutting down Rye’s spread offense and asserting itself to show why it’s one of the best defensive units in the section.
