PMHS ice hockey wins Section 1, Division II championship
The PMHS ice hockey team defeated John Jay-Cross River 9-1 on Sunday, winning the Section 1, Division II championship. This is the team’s 12th section title since 2000.
With the win in the books, the team will travel to Plattsburgh next weekend for a one-round regional tie against the winner of the Section 7 championship between Beekmantown and Northeastern Clinton on Wednesday. A victory will advance the Pelicans to the state semifinals in Buffalo on March 12.
Just like the first time Pelham and John Jay met—when the Pelicans won 8-2—Pelham started off hot and never cooled down. Sophomore Griffin Evans started the scoring only three minutes into the game, off a wrap-around pass from senior captain Ben Rosenberg. Seventeen seconds later, star junior Louie Marcellino put the boys up 2-0 with 14 minutes to play in the first. The scoring went silent for about 10 minutes before Marcellino grabbed his second, and senior captain Henry Smith netted another before the first period ended.
From then on out, Pelham kept up the pace, scoring three goals in the second and two in the third. Rosenberg finished the day with a hat trick, while notching his 100th career varsity point in the process. Marcellino added four goals to his tally. Also scoring was junior Eric Elbery.
