Assist. Superintendent Garcia to become new district HR head as Pelham searches for teaching and learning chief

Dr. Stephen Garcia is to become the Pelham school district’s new executive director of human resources and leadership.

Dr. Stephen Garcia is expected to leave his position as assistant superintendent for curriculum instruction and personnel to become the Pelham school district’s executive director of human resources and leadership, a new position created in the 2022-23 school budget, according to an email from Superintendent Dr. Cheryl Champ, who said the move will come at Wednesday’s board meeting.

Garcia’s old job was eliminated by the school board when it created the position he’s to take on and another new post, assistant superintendent for teaching and learning. The latter executive “will provide an exclusive focus on assuring the highest quality curriculum, instruction, assessment and pedagogical practices continue to thrive,” Champ said.

Champ sent the email to announce virtual meetings for families as part of the district’s search for the best candidate for the new assistant superintendent’s position.

Families are invited to attend one of two open virtual forums:

Champ also encouraged families and staff to complete a short survey to assist with the search.

As part of this process, the district will hold focus groups with instructional faculty, administrators and board of education members.

“The information gleaned from these focus groups and the survey will help formulate a leadership profile that will be used to screen prospective candidates,” Champ said. “Top candidates will then meet with a committee of teachers, administrators and families, with finalists being interviewed by my cabinet and then the board of education, with a final selection and appointment anticipated by mid-July.”
