PMHS students Horner and Wang to compete in NYS Girls Swimming and Diving Championships
Pelham Memorial High School sophomore Maddie Horner and senior Cindy Wang will compete Saturday in the New York State Girls Swimming and Diving Championships run by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association. Horner will swim in the 100 butterfly and the 200 individual medley, and Wang will also compete in the 200 individual medley.
This past month, Horner qualified for states with fast times in her races. On Oct. 12, she competed in a dual meet against Scarsdale, putting up a time of 59.34 in the butterfly. Two weeks later, she finished the 200 IM in 2:12.67 at the Division II league championships at SUNY Purchase.
One of the challenges Horner said she faced was balancing her swimming career with academics: “A lot of meets are during the week on Thursdays and Fridays. You have to make up work. I’ve done work on the road to competitions.”
