Vote urged for Burke because of positive impact he would have on school board

To the editor:

I’m writing to wholeheartedly support Sid Burke as a candidate for our board of education. Those that know me know how passionately I care about Pelham. Like most of us, a big draw to Pelham was the short commute to the city and excellent schools. Over the past 10-plus years in town, my family and I have grown to love so much more about Pelham while still valuing its education system.

In addition to having two kids in the school system (sixth and eighth graders), I’ve been heavily involved with Scouts, coached numerous Little League teams and volunteered many hours to many causes and activities throughout town. I’ve been engaged in many of the town discussions both in person and online over the years and like to think that I fairly evaluate each new topic, issue and candidate independent of political affiliations, and am willing to change my opinion when presented with new information.

With all this in mind, it was important for me to write this letter and share what a tremendous positive impact Sid would have as a member of the board of education. I’ve known Sid for many years and the underlying theme has always been Sid’s commitment to doing what needs to be done for the betterment of those around him. Whether it was stepping in to fill a much needed den leader role in Cub Scouts or joining the Village of Pelham Planning Board, he’s taken on these roles and excelled at them. I’m certain Sid will bring that same dedication to the board of education.

If you’ve had the chance to sit and have a conversation with Sid, you’ve no doubt experienced his amazing ability to engage and understand. I’d venture to guess you’ve also spoken more than listened during these conversations because Sid is so adept at asking the right questions, processing your response and ultimately providing deep, thoughtful insights you didn’t even know you were looking for. I can’t think of a better skill for a school board candidate to have.

These are critical times for our school district with the five-year plan, contract renewals and facilities plan updates all coming up. Sid’s ability to process information, critically think about solutions and find consensus will be invaluable to all of these areas along with the multitude of other situations that come before the board of education.

There is no one I’d rather see on this board of education than Sid because I trust him implicitly to do the right thing for our schools and our children and make our district even better in his time serving.

When you go to vote on May 16, please join me in voting for Sid Burke!
