Pelham’s Kate Douglass and Team USA closed off the 2024 Paris Olympics in grand style by winning the women’s 4x100m medley relay, giving Douglass a second gold from the games.
The U.S. women posted a world-record-breaking time of 3:49.63 in the final, beating their own record set back in 2019.
Although Douglass did not compete in the final round, the medley relay race rules say all swimmers who compete in both the heats and the finals receive medals if their team wins.
During the preliminary round, the U.S. swimmers put up the second fastest time in heat one with a mark of 3:56.40, as Douglass recorded the fastest leg (0:52.71). Team USA was shy of Canada by 0.30 seconds.
Across both heats, the U.S. posted the fourth fastest time, short of top finisher Australia by 0:01.59, which previously won the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay.
But in the medal race for the 4x100m medley, the U.S. women were uncatchable.
Douglass, a 2019 graduate of PMHS, came into the Olympics with one bronze medal from the 2021 Tokyo games captured in the 200m individual medley (IM). She leaves Paris with four more, including her first Olympic gold, which she won in the women’s 200m breaststroke on Thursday, and silver medals in the women’s 200m IM and the women’s 4×100 freestyle relay.
