The Village of Pelham Municipal Center built to house the mayor and trustees, administrative employees, the fire department and the police department in one building is beginning to be used by board members and employees.
All construction will likely be completed by March, and the center will fully open in the new year, according to Mayor Chance Mullen.
Following the start of a lengthy move-in process on Dec. 5, Pelham firefighters spent their first full night in the Municipal Center on Dec. 17. The fire department is now responding to all calls from the new building.
One of the biggest benefits of the center is the increased space for local government and emergency services, said Mullen.
The building was designed with separate rooms for regular and executive sessions of the village board, a room to handle the private arrest of minors and bays for the fire department’s vehicles. Sidewalk space was added so fire apparatus can easily pull out onto Fifth Avenue.
Due to the increase in storage space, records dating back to the 1860s will be stored on site.
On the rooftop is a patio at the corner of Fifth Avenue and Third Street overlooking the Pelham Art Center. The outdoor space will be open for public use during the warmer months, said Mullen.
He said Pelham Town Historian Arthur Scinta will be working with the board to showcase the village’s history on the wall leading to the main meeting room as well as on a limestone tower on the third floor.

It looks great but I wish it included a community center. That’s something Pelham is lacking and has been for a long time. That community center could hold teen nights like a place on Fifth did years ago. I don’t remember much about it because I only went twice but I remember it being a lot of fun. I guess the library is our community center and can hold teen nights (and maybe does) but it’s something that came to mind when I read about the space to “arrest minors”. We should be giving them a space to have fun too.
