The PMHS girls basketball team started the 2024-25 season on an impressive five-game winning streak.
The Pelicans captured the championship in the Brewster Tournament with a 66-47 win over Blind Brook High School on Dec. 13. Senior captain Taylor Green was named the all-tournament player. Freshman Valentina Arakas was awarded tournament MVP and sophomore Emma Namba, team MVP.
The undefeated streak includes a 65-43 win over Yonkers Montessori Academy in Pelham’s first game on Dec. 5, a 60-47 victory at Hendrick Hudson High School on Dec. 9 and two wins versus John Jay High School—56-47 on Dec. 12 and 54-34 on Dec. 16.
“I think that the team has started the season off on a good note and is looking to continue building and getting even better,” said Namba. “Especially after last season, playing well into the [post-season] and going back to the County Center is the main goal.”
In their most recent win against John Jay, the girls put up 15 steals, 2 blocks, 10 assists and 49 rebounds. The Pelicans shot 28% from the field, 31% from behind the three-point line and 58% at the free-throw stripe.
Last season, Pelham ran up a 14-6 record and won through to the semi-finals in the Section One tournament. Green is looking to lead the team on another strong playoff run.
The team faces Eastchester High School on Dec. 27.
